Different rear end housings?

I have two rear end housings out of 66 T-Birds. One is is smooth in the back the other is kind of shaped around the ring gear. Does anyone know if it means anything?

You may have one "9 inch" rear end and one "9-3/8 inch" rear end.. Otherwise, I don't know....

Think i figured it out. The bigger housing seems to be a equa lock rear and the one thats shaped like the ring gear seems to be open
