Location of Timing Marks?

The shop manual shows a nice close up of the timing marks for my 1965, but it was so close that I could not tell where on the engine to look. I aimed my light at the spots where I suspected the marks would be, but didn't see anything. I'm guessing that either there is some grime blocking things up or I'm looking in the wrong spot.

Would someone please provide me with some engine landmarks?

On my 66 looking at the engine from the front its about 10:00 o:clock. With a/c I had to pull the a/c idler pulley and belt off to see the mark.

The timing marks can be seen without removing engine parts. The marks are on the harmonic balancer behind the crankshaft pulleys. Perhaps your pointer is missing. The line of sight for the timing marks is behind the battery, under the coolant tank, normal to the crankshaft centerline.

When ever we timed cars we would locate the marks and clean them. Then mark the spot you want with white chaulk so when the light flashed they show up good.

Yoda,
I just read an interesting article in Car & Parts about timing an engine where the timing marks are missing or distorted. Use a vacuum gauge connected to a vacuum source (like the PCV). Warm the engine to running temp. Adjust the distributer to reach the highest vacuum. If you advance too far, the vacuum will drop off. Tighten the distributer nut and take it for a drive. If you get a knock, retard the spark a little. Hope this helps...
