Another shifting problem

Took steering wheel & turn signal mechanism off to check out the sloppy shifting & cannot get the collar off to check the shift or detente plate. What am I doing wrong? Why won't the collar come off? Something seems to be holding it. Do I have to take the shift lever off?

shifter problem

It sounds like you are down to the point where you remove the two nuts (7/16 ", I think) that hold the collar in place.. Have you removed those nuts? Maybe you should have the shift lever out as well.. Harley Eaton

Shifter problem

[] I forgot to mention: the detent is not the solution to the sloppy shifter problem.. The sloppy shifter is probably due to the shifter tube bearing being GONE.. They usually deteriorate to the point where they are no more.. This
bearing can be replaced without taking the steering column apart..

I went through this recently. Replaced upper/lower bushings along with the shift lever and the detent plate. To get to the detent place you have to wedge your way in there after removing all of the bolts, etc. I only had about a 1/4 to 3/8" opening in which to work and I felt like I was doing microsurgery. Search the old thread here, I think someone detailed the process pretty well.
