I am in the same boat. Just bought a car stored since 1968. I decided to pull the engine so I could go through it. I just didn't want to risk screwing something up. My wiring is in bad shape so I couldn't do anything until that got sorted out anyway. If you want to try I would suggest at least pulling the pan and valve covers and making sure you don't have a lot of build up in the engine. Sure don't want to risk a clogged oil passage starving the engine.
