YES, it is a dana 44..but a 'special', ford type unit...not exactly like the dana 44s in all those old mopars.. but very close.....meaning the axle 'ends' are like ford 9 inch...not mopar like...and the carrier unit has smaller size side bearings than a normal mopar dana 44.....so, you could, (like i did) rebuild it with mopar shim kits (get 2 kits, one will not give you the correct number of size of shims..(been there)...and you can put a posi in it....(just call rider racing and tell them what you have and they will sell you the posi and the special sized side carriers bearings)......(done that)......ed mlynek ..i have photos and text of this--i can e-mail it to you...call me at...706-376-7514...bye. ('56 birds also have the same dana 44....'57 birds went to the famous 9 inch ford rear)
