[b]Hello to all T-bird fans,
My name is Cliff Donnon from South Australia & I have been restoring a 55 t-bird for approx. 4 years. My question is about what size 6 volt battery to fit.I can buy one which is 9 in. long , 7 in. wide, 8 in. high & 500 amp hour. The next size up is 12 in. long, 7 in. wide, 8.5 in. high & 550 amp hour. Which size do i need , the 12 in. battery is a tight squeeze & very heavy. Regards, Cliff Donnon. |

Sorry, not clear enough,
what I should have said is,
does the smaller battery have enough cranking power to turn the 292 over & start it after a rebuild ? Or should I go to the larger battery which has 950 amp. hours ? (not 550-600 as previously stated ) Cant get the American specialty size batteries in Australia. Please help, Cliff Donnon, South Australia. |

Cliff,
First off, congratulations on your project. I've had my 55 for its 2nd season now, and its always a high to get behind its wheel. My car I wanted as a driver and I installed the smaller of the two choices you have referred to. Its a stock, totally rebuilt 292, and it never fails to crank and start quickly, after pumping the accelerator 3 or 4 times first when cold, and not at all when warm. The purists will want me shot at dawn, or sooner, but I even went so far as to cut down the battery box to better fit the battery, including its hold down hardware. The next owner can put it back to original if he wants to, but that'll be 30 years from now when I enter the nursing home. (Sniff) Hint! Put a quick disconnect at the battery post, to prevent those battery drains from brake lights that don't shut off, short circuit fires, and attempted thefts. You'll be glad you did. Best of luck with your ride! |
