Auto Transmisson fluid change

I want to change the fluid in my '55 auto trans, but need to know what problems I will encounter! To empty the old fluid, do I need to remove the pan, and is there a filter that needs replacing? In the catalogs it shows a screen but does that need replacement or just a good cleaning???

Most AT's do not have a plug. I usually use a large drain pan and line the floor under and around with news paper to catch what the pan doesn't. You'll want to drop one side or corner of the pan to get a good flow going. Buy a new filter kit from your local parts store and toss the old filter and install new. Clean off old gasket material, install new gasket, don't over tighten the bolts. Some AT's have a converter drain, probably not so much in 55. Refill with with fresh Ford ATF and your on the road. Good Luck
