Why would you not use valve cover gaskets?

No Harley, I will use gaskets of course. I was wondering is I should use silicon or a permatex sealer as well or nothing at all on the gaskets

Silicon to attach them to the valve cover and the other side nothing. It's what my engine building book suggests.
