newbie from the uk with little problem?

hi guys,

my dad has a 1962 t-bird that we have been doing some restoration work on.it has been fully stripped on the body and freshly repainted.sadly then a piston ring broke up so we have had the engine fully rebuilt.we are now putting the engine etc all back in now and have come across something that is confusing us......

the gearbox didnt really change gear properly although it was driveable- we have now found that there should be a pipe attatched to it for some sort of vaccum actuator which was never attatched.
on the inlet manifold we have a t-piece which both pipes of different diameters both fed to the brake booster,at the same place-the smaller diameter pipe has some sort of one-way valve fitted to it.

does anyone know which is the correct way to pipe up the vaccum pipes to the servo(booster) and the gearbox.also we have a metal box on the o/s inner wing with no pipes attatched to it but we have found a pipe going into the cabin through the bulkhead that may have fitted onto it-maybe power locks? if so,should it be fed from the vaccum from the engine/inlet manifold.

hope this makes some sort of sense to someone who can shed some light on it for us....any pics/diagrams would be of great help

thanks

There was a extra nipple on the booster check valve for the hose to the vacuum modulator on the transmission. I don't think vacuum door locks were offered in 1962.
It sounds like you have an air conditioned car. Vacuum from the check valve goes to the vacuum reservior near the battery and from there to the AC/ heater control in the console through the small vacuum lone.

the inlet on our car on the brake booster has 2 inlets/outlets for hoses to be attatched.im presuming then that one is an inlet from the inlet manifold which then tee's off down to the gearbox-and neither of these pipes should have a one-way valve fitted along the pipe.

our car does have air con fitted so the box with 2 connections on it next to the battery has something to do with the air con?

ill try and get a picture up of what i have got and how i think it should go.

thanks for your help

Newby from UK

There are two nipples on the brake booster valve ? Right? The large nipple is for the vacuum hose from the intake manifold (the vacuum supply). The smaller nipple is for the hose that goes to the vacuum modulator on the transmission.(no check valve here). The vacuum can near the battery is the reserve for the heater/AC. Larger nipple is for vacuum off the intake manifold. Should have vacuum check valve in the hose. Small nipple is for vacuum to the heater/AC. Hose goes through the firewall.
