62 T-Bird Timing Problem
Hello,
I recently purchased a 62 T-Bird with a 390 4 barrel and I can not get the timing to adjust. I think the timing has been 180 degree advanced because I can not get the dot to line up with the scale. Thanks for any help that you can give me. Mark |

62 T-Bird timing problem
You didn't say whether or not you can get the engine started. No. 1 cylinder is first on the passenger side, you know. Often the problem (not finding the mark) is that the rubber between the crankshaft pulley and the timing marks has failed and allowed the timing marks to move around. Find number 1 at top center on the power stroke and mark your damper. How do you do this? Call me at 817-337-0666 for instructions. It involves removing the valve cover to observe the valve action and using a stiff wire to determine piston location.

RE Timing
Hi Harley,
Thank you for your reply and offering instructions. The car does start and is drivable until the car heats up. The timing is so far advanced that it messes up once the engine is hot. We have tried to adjust the engine RPMs because once hot it idles at 900 RPM, but when you get them to 550, the car just dies in drive. When trying to adjust the timing, the timing marks do not even show under the timing light. I think that the timing has been advanced 180 degrees. I am going to try and set some time aside for Saturday to tackle the timing situation. I might give you a call Friday once I figure out what my plan is for Saturday. Thank you for all you help. 62 TBird timimg problem
Of course you know, the timing is not advanced 180 Deg. The mark might be 180 deg. off, but the timing is maybe as much as 25 deg. off. Feel free to call.
Maybe you can time it with a vacuum gauge. |

Check the motor for vacuum leaks, start the engine and spray some starting fluid (either) around the intake manifold fitittings, carb base ETC. if it speeds up there,s your leak fix it then try to reset your timing and idle.

You need to get under the car and mark the timing mark with white chalk for it to show up. The dwell has to be 26 to 28.5 deg. point gap 0.014 to 0.016. If the dwell is off, your timing is going to way off too. Bye the way, did you disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor before checking the timing.
My bird is challenging my skills as well. Good luck. |
