Wink Calling fastguy ...

Ok fastguy, you seem to be the one to ask. Don't know if you've seen my other posts, I bought 88 5 speed couple days ago and took to the track last night. Left at about 2300 rpms and bogged awfully. I'm used to drving worked 94 Z28 so this turbo thing is all new to me. Was just playing, don't want tc as racecar but would be nice to be able to practice rt's with it. It doesn't seem to bog at all when I take off at normal rpms from redlight. I had 88 auto and playing on the street I could bring the boost up and leave hard from a light. I'm confused and sick of bogging !!!

are you dumping the clutch? if so, thats where your problem is...2300 rpms is too low for a clutch dump...full boost doesnt come in until about 2500 rpms if i remember correctly...next time, ease the clutch out and as soon as you here the turbo start to spool, let it out all the way and listen to the tires turn...what mods have you done?

Not dumping the clutch. I just bought the car wed soo .. I know aftermarket exhaust and car gets 15 lbs of boost at times. I'm used to racing a Z28 that ran 12's so this whole 4 cyl turbo thing is very different for me. Not looking to beat the car just like practicing reaction times til racer done. Is kinda hard to practice with 2.8 60' times cause car bogs. (Not to mention embarressing)

The launch on a heavy turbo 4 car is crucial. If you bog, you're dead. If you wheelspin and then hook, you're dead. You have to find where your car will hook without spinning. I have 170k on my car so the suspension is a little softer than yours so it hooks pretty decent on BFG Radial TA 235/60/15's. Set your shocks on soft to hook better. I do a very mild burnout to clean the tires up. If the track is slippery, I may do a slight clutch slip where instead of dumping at 3700-4000 rpm's, I let the clutch up slowly, around 2 seconds to let it up. This beats the crap out of the clutch though. The best thing for you may be tires. I have never run sticky tires and have pulled consistant 2.0 sixty foot times with street radials but I could probably do better with drag radials or slicks. The other thing is the turbo. You have an Ishi-Warner usually referred to as an IHI used in 87 and 88. I have the stock Garret T-3 used from 83-86. The IHI comes on very hard and fast then falls off where the T-3 comes on a little slower but pulls harder through the top end. This my help account for why near stock 87-88 TC's blow the tires loose then fall on their faces while an earlier car can launch at high RPM and then boost kicks in and lets it rip.I have seen cars with identical setups to mine except the turbo run about 3 tenths slower due to the IHI running out of steam.

I'm picking up an 86 turbo coupe. What kind of changes would have to be made to use the 86 turbo on my 88?? The tires I'm using are pretty new Pep Boys Futura's which my ex used on 12 sec Stang and was very impressed with on the track. (his et streets bit it so he ran using street tires) he also had drag racing suspension kit on car tho ... lol

To run the Garrett, you need the oil feed and return lines from the 86 as well as a compressor outlet from an SVO mustang to hook into the intercooler. You could try just cutting the aluminum discharge tube from the 86 and flipping it around to see if it would hook up. I'm not sure, I never tried it.

I don't think the Oil Feed Line has to change ??? I used the same Oil Feed line when I swapped my IHI for a T3 (out of an SVO). I did swap the brass elbow feed line fitting on the T3 with the one from the IHI though. Isn't that OK ?

Turbonetics sells a T3 Oil Return Line Flange and 1/2" FPT fitting (around $13.00 for both). I used the block side portion of my IHI Return line (cut off) and ran a braided hose between it and the Turbonetics flange.
