Hey,All!
I just got an '88 tc w/ 137k miles and it seems to be "flooding"
There is a fuel odor under the hood.
Rough idle and wants to die with a/c turned on, and/or when you put it in gear.
Was $400 a good buy?
Thanx all, I'm lookin foward to playin with this thing... Bo [list]

$400 seems like a very good buy, the flooding could be caused by the throttle positioning sensor located on the top ot the throttle body it is tword the back and held on by 2 philips screws (we had the same problem with an 83) the sensor is about $40 kinda high for a peice of plastic and some wires I thought try that and see if it fixes your problem

If you got a fuel smell under the hood you need to visually check and see if any of the injectors are leaking. They can leak around th eO rings at either end (easily repairable) or from the bodu of th einjector in a couple places (not repairable)

Next thing to do is remove the vacuum hose at the fuel pressure regulator which is mounted to the fuel rail in front of the intake mafld. If there is gas in the line or even the smell of gas in the line, the diaphram in the regulator is ruptured. Gasoline is probably travelin up the vacuum line and into the upper intake. Even if there is no gas or smell , the regulator could still be defective and allowing too much or too little fuel pressure. E-mail me and I'll send you scans of the Ford Service manuals for the fuel system diagnostics.

Since you just got the car and may not know it's history, I would suggest you do a tuneup on it. This may or mayno solve part of you rough running problem, but you need to know it's good before going on to other causes.
I strongly suggest you use only the Ford Motocraft stock replacement wires. These engines are very tempermental about what brand of wires. You can get these at Ford or Advance Auto. I also recommend using the Autolite 764 copper plugs. Some have used platniums without problems, others have had trouble. Don't use any kind of Bosch plug.
Gap them around 0.032-0.033" Set the timing at 10-12* with the sprout disconnected. for more info on you car see the website in my signature.
