Post rpm's jumping ?????

Hi i just bought an 88 tc its in great shape but when i strart it the rpm's go up to about 2-3 thou, i tried to lower the idle but when i do it starts to sputer then makes a popping sound from the passenger side.
i think that maybe its the timing thats off or could it be that it just needs a good tuneup please help i love the car and i want to get it running good, it also has a major exhaust leak.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your TPS is out of range. You can check the voltage of the TPS with a voltmeter. It should be sat at .94.
