I want to rewire the stereo system but cannot figure out where the stock amp is located. Can anyone point me in the right direction

I'm not sure, but I think the amp is built into the radio.

isnt the amp usually mounted in the trunk behind the rear seat?

What year is your car? My 84 the amp was mounted where the center speaker would have been and my 87 has it mounted under the package tray in the trunk.

What is a package tray? On my 88 with Premium Sound I had to take some of the trunk a part to replace the rear shocks, I didn't see any amp there, but I wasn't looking for one either.

I refer to the sheet metal that the rear speakers are mounted. I belive the amp is mounted close to the right speaker above the trim. I will go out and look on my car to be sure.
