My 1965 T-bird did not come with the rear speaker, and I would like to install one. Where were they mounted, and is there a bracket that I will need to get.
On the 1964/66 Thunderbirds, the rear speaker was located above the rear center arm rest. They used a different package tray which had a speaker grill in it.
It also had the studs to mount the 5X7 inch speaker.
Harley.....If the car has a package tray with a speaker grille, then it has (or once had) the rear 5X7 speaker. But if the car didn't have the rear speaker, then there's nothing above the rear center armrest......just a plain trim piece or something. Correct? Just wanted to clarify this. Thanks.
Thunderbird HQ does not have the pieces I need to make the car look original wit the proper oem speaker set-up. They suggested I look for a used one, and paint it to match the car's interior.
Any ideas on where to get said parts? I would prefer new parts, but I guess i would take whatever I could get.
You'll need to find a 65 Tbird parts car that had the rear speaker, then remove its rear package tray (along with bracket and bolts for the rear speaker). After painting it to match your interior, you should be able to install it with no problems.
If you have no luck at your local junkyard, call one of the Tbird vendors that carry used body parts. Guys like Pat Wilson www.wilsontbird.com, Jim Dottling www.thunderbirdconn.com, and Nick Pepe www.t-birdsbynick.com, have parts cars on hand and might even have a package tray in the correct color that won't need repainting. Good luck.
