Got a question... Every so often I get a rattle and squeel from either the fan belt or the water pump on the 312. I can go 100 miles without it making any noise and it crops back up again. I know that the little hole in the waterpump casing is not meant for lubrication - but if I shoot some WD-40 into it - the noise goes away. Any suggestions? I have a brand new serpentine belt with the proper tension on the pullys.

Serpentine belt???? Why, how etc.???
Generally speaking, the addition of a water pump lubricant to the coolant is enough to keep the pump quiet.

P.S. Check your vibration damper to make sure there is no axial movement.

Maybe I'm using the wrong term - it is a Ford script belt from a parts house that has the corrugated surface on the side toward the pully. My original gates v-belt was flat on the inside and thought that that was the problem. Just squeeled again last night - shot WD=40 in the little hole in the waterpump and all quite!

Sorry for the confusion re: serpentine
