Hey guys,
Alright, my brother is tired of working on his 2.3 turbo in his '86 coupe, and he found a 289 V-8 out of '67 Galaxy that's supposed to run good. Does anybody know if this engine will bolt onto his T-5? Are there any other problems that we're gonna need to look out for?

Thanks

as far as i know, no it wont, youd have to get a 5.0 bellhousing and all that good stuff

i dont think the TC tranny will hold up to the torque a 289 has, the 2.3 had next to no torque

Isn't the T-5 the same tranny they use in the Mustangs? If it can handle the torque of a HO 302, it should certainly be able to handle a 289, not?

a T5 did come in a Mustang, but what people dont realize is that theyre are different "grades" or types of T5's, the ones behind turbo coupes only withstand i think about 240 ft/lbs of torque before you risk they tranny, then ones that came in stangs

if you really decide to use this engine and tranny combination, your gonna need to get ahold of a 5.0 bellhousing for a T5 because the 2.3 has a different bellhousing pattern

also the trannys input shaft is smaller in diameter, so youll have to use a different pilot bearing and throwout bearing, i head ones from a probe will work, but i dont know for sure

i dont know what youd have to use for a flywheel though, im not sure if the 5.0 flywheel and clutch will work or if youd have to find one for a 289

Hey 232, thanks for all your help, but just to complicate things a little for you, the T-5 came out of a 2.3 turbo Mustang. Is that going to be the same grade as the T-bird tranny, or the 5.0 grade T-5? Also (I have no idea about flywheels and such), the 289 came with a locked up C-4 tranny. Are any of those parts going to work with the T-5?
And Rick, I don't know what all you're looking for, but the thing is that when he bought the car, he had to have a new 2.3 put in. With all of the problems he has had with head gaskets and everything else, we're kinda believing that he got skunked with a regular 2.3 rather than a turbo grade 2.3. So, he just had it diagnosed as needing a complete overhaul. If you're still interested in a hashed engine, I can talk to my bro and see what he wants to do if northwest Iowa isn't too far out of your way.
Thanks

the Turbo stang tranny is about the same at the T5 from a bird

as for C4 parts working, none, you need a new flywheel, clutch and all of that, i would recommend you call a local mustang restoration place, some sell kits to convert a 289 Mustang over to a T5, they might have everything youd need
