Trans fluid change

I am planing on changing my atf on my 63 and here are my questions.
1) What type of atf should be used. Any comments about AMS oil's atf?
2) Will the transmission be dammaged by being exposed to air after 50 years
of so with the same atf?
3) How much atf do I realy need?

5) What do i need to look out for to avoid costly mistaks.
Anyones hind sight will be greatly appreaciated.

Looks like this has not been done a lot by readers here...FWIW I'd take to a trans shop and have them do it and adjust bands etc as needed. Should not cost a lot of $$$.

I have been planning to do this for some time now and have had the same questions as nagel. Was putting it off but now may not have a choice.

Last Friday I drove my 63 Hardtop to work and ended up getting carried home on the back of a flatbed due to fluid spraying out from somewhere. After two and a half hours up on the hoist, a mechanic and I could not determine where the leak was coming from. We cleaned it up, took it for a test drive and no leak. I've driven it on two very short trips since then and haven't had a problem. Either way, I want to change the fluid.

I'm thinking you should use Type F atf. Don't know anything about Amsoil. "Exposed to air after 50 years"? If you only change the oil, does this question apply? I guess I don't understand.. How much atf? Are you going to drain the torque converter? If so, you may need 11 quarts. If not 5 or 6 quarts. Filter? I use WIX again and again.
