Trailer to haul 65 bird

We are looking for a trailer to pull behind our Ford explorer to take our 65 T-bird to shows and on longer trips that we don't want miles on the car. What sort of trailer should we be looking at? What specs should we be aware of? Thanks

You would need a trailer with dual axles and brakes on each axle, 15" tires and ramps. Since the Bird probably weighs 4500 LBS you would need a trailer with a 6500 LB GVW. Thats total weight of the trailer with the car on the trailer. I think thats to much for the Explorer. Also the doors have to be able to open past the trailer fenders once you get it up there. A steel trailer weighs about 2000 LBS.

Refer to the Owner's Manual on your Explorer to see what it's tow rating is and how much weight it's rated to pull. I don't think an Explorer would be rated to pull something as heavy as a 65 Tbird. Short distances maybe okay......but for short distances, you could just drive the Bird to carshows. Another way to find out would be to call Uhaul (and pretend to need to rent an auto transporter) They'll ask what kind of car you have (Explorer) and then look it up in their book. If it's not properly tow-rated, they'll tell you. Good luck.

Also you have to watch the tongue weight. To much weight on the tongue leads to swaying and rear tire blow outs. You sometimes can't get the weight distributed correct even though your within the range. So you just have to be careful with your project.

The Explorer comes with the Class II towing package which only carries a 4100 lb. rating. There is a heavier duty option package for the Explorer and is a Class III/IV package. Plus you also need to take into consideration of the wiring harness, if it has a 4 pin harness, you can't add a trailor with electric brakes. If it has a 7 pin, then you have no problem.
