Hello all.. Just starting to work on my 56. Problem is it's too difficult to drive and shift and I'm only 6'3. I'm not able to adjust the telescopic portion because it's stuck or I'm not doing it the right way. Any suggestions! Also, is there some type of conversion kit that would allow more room for the driver? I realize this would "ding" the value but might be a whole lot more comfortable. Thanks in advance.

T. Had the same problem with my 57 telescopeing column. I put a towel and a large pipe wrench on the rotating cylinder that locks the column in place. I gently applied some pressure and some light oil until I got it to move. Slowly applying pressues until the system would telescope and rotate. The good news is that I am 5'-8" and the system fits me fine. Gregory

YES----I THINK 9 OUT OF TEN EARLY BIRDS HAVE THIS PROBLEM.....it's because sooner or later it rains with the top(s) off and moisture gets into the threads of the steering column 'barrel' threads...this cause severe rust and 'freezing' of all parts....like gregory said...use a towel and light pressure to un-freeze it --also squirt a LOT of W-D 40 down into it and wait a while for it to penetrate---sooner or later it will 'unstick'..when it does, get some "never-seize" stuff and coat everything with it...and 'use' the telescoping parts once a week to keep it 'loose'... I did this in 2004 and i still have a nice operating column...later ed mlynek
