Speedometer Needle Hop

My recetly acquired 62 convertible speedo has needle hop . It jumps around more in cold weather . I removed the speedometer and pulled the cable which appears in good condition . It was clean and well oiled so I cleaned it again, oiled and reinstalled. I assume it could be either the gear at the transmission tail shaft or in the speedometer head. Idoubt if there is a kink in the cable housing as easily as the cable reinstalled . How hard is it to inspect the gear at the tranny ? Any recomendations as to a shop if I need to send the speedometr in . The odometer works well.

Hi Dallas,

my 62 had exactly the same issue but now works fine. What I did was replace the entire speedo cable including the outer cable. I noted that the outer sheath was squashed a bit in places and was cheap enough to do.

Then I removed the speedo and put some light grease on the internal gears after cleaning the dirt off them first. This is easier than replacing cable as gears are simple to get to.

The gear at transmission housing is easy if you can get under car, one bolt and the gear and cable will pull out. Be careful of losing fluid, try and keep back of car up, front down and/or a catch can. The gears are easily checked once out of transmission.

Once those jobs done no problems, bounce is gone, needle moves up and down nicely and no more clicking from gears.

Tks I will take a look at the gear at the tranny end first and if it is ok I will jsut replace the cable as I am told they may look ok but may be flawed inside. The odometer is qite and the gears are clean and works well . I do not see andy way to to see the internal gers of the speedo without taking the casting case apart which I will pass on.
