power windows?

How can I tell whether the motor is bad or if its just a switch thats bad? I don't want to order a new motor or switch and have it not be the problem. Any way to tell whats bad before spending $$$ on parts? Thanks.

First check to see if you are getting juice to the switch with a trouble light.If you are check to see if you are getting juice to the motor. If you are and the motor won't function the motor is probably at fault. Over the years, moisture is the bigest culpert. Also, check to see if you have a good ground.

Thanks Joe. Just have to find a trouble light and I should be in business. I highly suspect the motor, but will check it out like you suggested.

You need to detrmine if all windows will not work or just some. If all windows do not work - you will need to replace the power windows relay which is located under the hood on the firewall on the passengers side. There are three wires that connect to this two wires are push on and 1 wire is a screw on post (this is what makes it easy to find...) Once you replace this you will have power at the switches but your troubles may not be over yet. You may have to replace the window lock switch as that might have frozen over time in the locked position. After that you may need to replace the window switches as the originals are sure to be deteriorated. Once the switches are replaced you will most likely be all set but if the windows still do not work you may need to remove the door panels and degrease, clean and oil everything (a few times) start testing these slowly and you may find that the windows will come back to life. I have the new pw relays for $89 + 7.95 shipping - let me know if you are interested.

oops, did I say trouble light--I meant a test light--it lights up if you have voltage to a component you suspect. As Paul says, ck the relay and go from there. You can get the test light at any parts store for a few bucks.

the test light is good - upi can also hook a jumper wire to the fuse panel and touch the power window switch on the side - this will raise or lower your window if you are in a jam. this will at least tell you what state your motors are in and if hey will possibly work once the relay is replaced.
