Have a '55 with 3 speed and overdrive. Had overdrive fixed and was told to always leave it in the out position and don't push the lever in while driving. That seems strange since manual said something about O/D after 27 MPH.

How exactly does O/D work? Should I push the lever in to engage O/D and should it be done after 27MPH? Or do I pull that lever out and leave it that way? Thanks

I've been trying to find one. No luck. Bought the car 18 months ago and most of the time it's been in the shop being worked on. Mechanic is now gone. Car runs great except for this O/D thing. I'll keep looking for a manual.

The TBird parts suppliers have reprints of the factory owners manual. I looked in CASCO's catalog and they have them. Part # OM55, OM56, OM57. CASCO is at 800-374-0914

Paul,
Thanks very much. I'm new to old T-birds so I appreciate the help. I'll order the books today so I can learn more about the car now that it's running.

My first Bird, a 55 is on the back of a truck being shipped to me at this time and has an automatic transmission, but I would imagine the Overdrive in almost anything works like my old '52, '54, and '56 Mercury's did.
And that is, you only engage or disengage it (pulling the lever out or pushed it back in) when in gear and underway (moving), giving it fuel, not stopped with engine off, or idling, or slowing down. Underway, and giving it fuel, ONLY.
