New Car problems....

Well, I am now the proud owner of a 79 T bird Town Landau with the 351 W, and while it is a great car, it has some flaws, and I am hoping someone knows the remedy. When it goes up any kind of incline, even a gentle one, it loses power, and sometimes dies as well. We are thinking it may be the head gasket. PCV valve is fine, but we are going to replace it anyway. A full tune-up is also coming. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I would look first at the carb, specifically the floats. This assumes that the problem does not exist under heavy acceleration on flat land. If you are starving for gas on flat land, I would look then at fuel pressure, starting with replacing the fuel filter. I would bet the problem is somewhere in the fuel system. Charles

Well, Dad and I fixed it, and it ran

Well, Dad and I fixed it, and it ran great, but only for about four days! Today, on the way back after getting duals with glasspacks,(they sound great!!) it died on him, and it had to be towed home!(and in the rain too!!! Argh!) We are going to replace the fuel pump next, and after that, who knows. Hopefully this will fix her, for good!

Well, it didn't fix her. She will run great for about 5-10 mins but then it will lose power, and die. It can be started back up about an hour later, and has enough power to get home. Luckily we havn't drove it far from home, only walking distance!

Sounds to me like balky electronics, start with replacing coil, then go inside the distributor.


had similar problems with a MOPAR, turned out to be Hall effect sensor, not too familiar with the ?ford terminology as my Bird still has points.
