My mechanic (Butch) who has been rebuilding engines since dirt is having a major problem with my 312. He has just completed an extensive and expensive total rebuild. It is back in the car and runs great. However, after 500 miles it leaks oil.

I sent him Walt Nuckel’s web page on how to modify a Chrysler rear main for the 312. However, he still has a few additional questions. Can some one that knows Walt send him an e-mail to contact Butch or me? Butch says call collect if need be. Butch’s number is 303-279-3291

Jim, There is something later and greater than the modified Chrysler seal. Almost all T-Bird parts suppliers carry a new silicone seal for the 312 engine. the cost is ~$50. The Chrysler seal was OK when we didn't have anything better, but it was tricky. Try this new seal and PLEASE give us some feedback on the installation difficulty and effectiveness. I haven't used it and I don't know any one who has used it yet. Sounds like it should work very well.

Thanks Nomadbird for the reply. I gave the information to my mechanic. He doesn't have a computer and he just bought his fist fax machine last month. Claims to have used the rope trick for the last 40 years.

I ordered the molded type for my 312 (P/N 6A321-BRK) for $50. The parts book also talks about a Bolt, damper to crankshaft with a P/N 6A340. However, it is not shown in the drawing. Is this also smothing that needs to be ordered with the seal kit?

Jim,
That new seal should do the trick for you. You do not need to order the bolt. It is pictured on the lower right corner of page 40 of Concours Parts catalog. It sounds like that's the catalog you're using. Keep us posted on your experience with this new seal.

I just installed the silicone rear main seal and so far so good, not a drop. I did some research on the subject because my Bird leaked alot when I bought it. The previous owner said he replaced the rope seal and it started leaking shortly thereafter. My research showed that the rope seals available now lack the asbestos that the originals had and therefore burn up in short order ( you must also remove the crank in order to properly "pack" the rope into place ). When I removed the rope seal from mine, it was burnt to a crisp where it contacted the crank. The silicone replacement is far superior. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 253-851-7316. Jim

Thanks Earlybirdlover for the information. One question, do you have a 292 or a 312? According to the parts dealer, they use different materials in the different engines.
