I recently purchased a '57. The paint is in great condition except for marks on the rear deck where the tops sit. I've seen this on other Corvette and TBird roadsters of that era. Is there a way to clean/repair it without repainting the car? Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Some lubricant to apply to the weatherstrip or a product to protect the paint?

Take it to a good body shop and see if they can compound/polish it out.

No matter what you use to prevent it, it's just about impossible to stop it from happening. I have one of the better products on the market between the deck and the top and it still happened to me. You have to be anal in cleaning both the rubber and deck surfaces every time before attaching the top to the deck as microscopic pieces of dirt get on both surfaces. With even the very slight movement of the deck while the car is in motion any dirt can scratch the paint.

preventing marking

page 17 of the CASCO catalog RDPC will fix the problem, others have the same vinyl cover
