I just got a 56. I know that cabin heat has always been a problem, and that's where the side vents came from. The problem is, in summer, the vents only make matters worse. Does anyone know of any insulation procedures, etc. that could help? I've been advised to put a gate valve on the heater core, which seems like a good idea, but I'm certain there are other ways.

Well, You Must Have A Early '56 --cause In March '56, Birds Went To A 'water Cooled' Ford O Matic---before This The Trans Was 'air Cooled'--this Caused All The Trans Heat To Go Right Thru The Foor And Hit You...you Can Also Put $600 Of 'dynamat' Insulation Mat On (i Did)..it Helped A Bit--(plus I Went To A '62 Cruise-o-matic (water Cooled) And A Gigantic Griffith Alum. Radiator..both Helped A Lot..and (of Course Add Air Cond. (i Did)...and The Last Piece--a 1999 Camaro "air Dam' Under The Front Bumper To Channel More Air To Rad. All This And Now I Am A Cooled Off Dude...and I Have A 55 With No Side Vents..(don't Need Em Or Want Them With A/c Anyway) Good Luck Oh--if Ign. Timing Is A Tad Late, This Will Cause High Operating Temps..ck. This Out...the Cooler You Can Get The Motor To Run, The Less Heat Problems You Will Have To Fix........meaning I Also Run A 7 Blade Flex Fan And Two 12 Inch Electric Fans On A Settable Heat Swich....bye..please Run The Factory Radiator Shroud--it's A Must Have Thing To Reduce Temps...bye Ed Mlynek

There is a couple of things you can do, but some require the body off.

Put better insulation on the floor and firewall.

Don Hyde in Texas makes an exhaust system that gets rid of the muffler under the passenger area and has mufflers where the resonators go (no resonators are run). This keeps the floorboard cooler.

There are companies that make a muffler wrap

Put on a heat shield using sheet metal over the muffler. This one requires a body off though as it sits on top of the frame.
