When I purchased my 65, all gages were not working and all registered to the left (gas, oil pressure,temp.,voltage). I replaced the instrument constant voltage regulator that is mounted behind the speedometer housing. Now all the gages go to the right. Does anyone know what the problem is?

In Nov. 2001 my 64 T-Bird backfired and my oil, gas and temp gauges suddenly stopped working. I too bought the instrument voltage regulator, but have not installed it.

I got the backfiring problem repaired, but two weeks ago, after six months of no backfiring and no gauges, the car backfired as I cranked it to drive to church one Sunday morning. On my way to church I looked down and the gauges suddenly were working again.

Don't ask me how this happened! Maybe, the Lord fixed it!

The oil pressure, temp and fuel are fed by the constant voltage regulater. If the ammeter is doing a dance and the gauges are going far right you have a short somewhere. I would suspect a loose or brken wire to or from the constant voltage regulater.

This is an old message, but did anyone figure out the problem?
My brother has a 64 and the gages aren't working on it. The ammeter works, but none of the other ones including the speedometer.
Any help would be appriciated.

the non-working speedo which is of course mechanical on the 66 bird,is probably a broken or disconnected cable. Its' failure is probabl unrelated to the dash gauges which are electrically operated. On my 66 it was simply a matter of changing -out the sending units, oil, gas and water.good luck,bj
