Eng. in 64

How can I tell if the eng. in a 64 is 390 or 427. The valve covers look a lot different than the 390 I have in my 62.

I doubt that you would find a 427 in a 64 Bird but stranger things have happend. Vavle covers and engine paint schems change and if it's not the original engine then year and model would alter what covers are on it and what color. There is a great site for these big block FE motors at feforums.com. If no one else here chimes in with any other input I'd ask there.

Why would you suspect or think it is a 427? What carburetor is on the engine? Can you post a picture?

Pull a spark plug and check the stroke

I beleive 427 and 390 have same 3.78 stroke

My bad, thinking 428 at 3.985. Unaware of 427 offered in a bird.
