Sorry for my multitude of postings lately, but I'm not big on reinventing wheels and this is where I come for advice.

A few days ago I started hearing a quiet "dinging" at low speeds (sort of like tapping a screwdrive on a metal pipe). I first thought it was a rock in my hubcap, then I thought it was my universal. I finally figured out that it seems to be coming from my speedometer (my gauge fluctuates with the sound).

Is this likely a cable in need of lubrication or something more?

This could be anything from your gauge to the worm gear in the transmission that connect to the speedometer cable. You may want to take the speedomter off the transmission first and turn it by hand and see if you feel it binde and any point. Remember to stuff a clean rag in the transmission hole as it will leak fluid. If it doesnt' feel like it binds, it would be in the transmission. If it does bindes, diconnect it from the speedometer itself and try again. If it doesn't feel like it is binding chances are your speedometer could be going bad.
