how can i clean the filter on a 56 tbird air cleaner with oil bath? It is quite expensive to buy a dry air filter and i was wondering if just changing the oil and brushing any loose dirt from the surface of the filter would be sufficient. As far as i can determine, the filter can't be removed.

A thorough cleaning consists of immersing and agitating the filter element in a petroleum based solvent like gasoline or parts cleaner. Rinse the filter using the same method in a fresh solvent solution." Force drying" using compressed air is good, but static air drying is fine. Static drying just takes longer. Clean the rest of the air cleaner with a rag moistened with the rinse solution, apply a little motor oil (very little) on the element, fill base with oil to indicated mark, reassemble. Then you can spend the next four days trying to get your hands clean-----but at least your carburetor is breathing clean air.
