84 TC Problems

I just purchased a 1984 2.3 turbo Thunderbird in very nice shape, well the outside of it. I first started it and it ran fine and then I drove it home and it started smoking very bad and thats when it went into the garage.

I started tearing into it and I took off the rubber hoses for the turbo and every thing and when I say everything I mean EVERYTHING was filled with oil... I havn't got real far into but from what I can see there was just oil everywhere... Even a huge puddle on the ground.

I know this isn't alot of information right up front but I was hoping for some hints tips and tricks, as I progress tearing it apart I will give updates on what I find.. Any information is much appreciated and thank you in advance.

Check for play in the turbo.

Checked the play. Some side to side maybe a 16th of an inch no in and out. I have the motor out of the car and and the head off the block. The number 4 cylinder was flooded with oil as well as the head gasket being blown.

But my intercooler box for the turbo. ( mounted on passenger side of of the engine compartment) was also filled with oil so oil would be blowing out of the turbo? I had a friend look at the turbo and he said maybe the sealed bearing between the turbines? Ideas?

I would agree with your friends thought on the seals also. I have had tons of birds but am rather new to the turbo ones as I have learned more on the fly with the one I have. My best suggestion would be to join NATO and ask there as thats all those guys play with.
