I was repairing my gauges this weekend when I found a pinched wire which made smoke come out of dash when I moved it and gauges quit. There is an inch long set of taped windings that stubs in right at the instrument voltage regulator that burned up (Male and female spade) that bridges the power supply to the regulator. Already fixed short and tested regulator which works so I removed this piece and plugged the ignition power directly to the regulator and all gauges work fine with no variation. What is this piece? Someone had replaced the regulator (very clean) before I got the car. I was wondering if this was part of the old regulator and they reused something they werent supposed to.
