My '57 has a fairly severe transmission fluid leak, leaking from a couple different seals. My mechanic first tried the cheap option of using an additive in the transmission fluid in the hopes it would act as a seal sweller, but that hasn't worked. He says that to repair the leaks, the tranny must be removed, and that unfortunately, the engine must be removed to access the tranny.

To all you '57 gurus out there, is this an accurate statement? I've been using this mechanic for a long time and he's competent and trustworthy, but if there are any other opinions out there I'd sure like to hear them before moving forward on such a repair.

Thanks,
G-Money

He is correct, although the crusty old experts knew how to remove it without taking the engine out.

Pulling the engine out will be safer, better, and easier than finding a crusty old expert.

I've been told the rear extension can be removed with the transmission in the car, then the transmission can be removed without taking the engine out. Seems to make sense to me.
