and he said that when he finally got around to pulling the engine, he found that 2 of the motor mounts are broken... He's calling around without much luck, but hopefully he'll come up with something quick. If he doesn't, does anyone (in or near NW Iowa preferably) have some/know where to find some?

I ended up going with the new/rebuilt motor. I really didn't know how good or bad of shape the bottom half of the engine was in, so I thought it'd be cheaper in the long run to start with something with a warranty. I get to go home next weekend to pick it up, and I'll be back with what I think...

Here's the scenario: 86 TC (150K miles)purchased for $200 not running. The body and interior are both great. The engine problem is found to be a cracked head. Which route would you all suggest I go... 1. new head- $600 plus labor... something like $900 total 2. new(rebuilt) engine- $1200...

If you want less backpressure, then would a glasspack be along the right lines?

another question... how tough would it be to switch in a 5-speed instead of the slushbox? or would it not be worth the trouble?

What exactly do you mean by a "better exhaust"? The moron who got it stuck and blew the head gasket ripped the back half of the exhaust system off when he pulled it out, so I'll have to replace it anyway.
