    Hard starting 390

RE: Cold start OK Restart slow: Is the engine cranking slow or is it slow to fire up? Could be couple of things.A) Yes, a bad coil could have internal shorts and is overheating reducing output on re-start. Don't need fancy/pricey coils. Original correct Ford coils work correctly. Would not...

    Lights Flickering

So nice to see a thanks in the replies once in a while. Many of these posts share training , education , and experiences of mechanican for many decades. Course, I'm at the age now where I would rather sit on the edge of the bed and talk about it rather than do it .

    Ticking Noise & Carb Plumbing

I would try to go where the mechanican experience is concentrated in N.C.- in the shops of current and former wiskey runners now law biding NASCAR drivers. If you could get one of the grey haired mechanics who worked on these 6o's engines to do your engine on the side, that would be perfect !

Tires for my 60 Sq Bird

Depart from what Ford put on the car and here you are asking about tire sizes. Whatever tires you put on the car, I hope you took a hard look at both front tires to see that they were not rubbing on Suspension at a full Right & Left turns. One guy came to me with wrong wheels and tires on a 63...

    convertible top

Have someone press "top Down" switch (this opens the deck solonoids to allow free flow of fluid to/from the deck pistons. Then manually pull up the deck. It's a tough pull but it gives you some idea of the pressure the pump puts out to work these tops & decks.

    Lights Flickering

Just thought of something else. At sundown, lift the hood and with engine running look for electrical spark(s) jumping to ground particularily around the ignition coil.

    Trans Dipstick length

Thanks Captain. Been there and many Oil & Trans lengths are missing for the 61-66 Birds . Since Oil and Transmission levels are crucial, I was hoping someone would see this thread and we could get it in print for all to see. I know there are 2 oil dipstick lengths on the 63 Bird w/ 390 CuIn...

    Question regarding possible purchase

P.S. Is the car a true Roaster with the correct numbers or a convertable upgraded with roaster accessories to look like a roaster? Makes a huge difference now and down the road at sell time .

    Question regarding possible purchase

"You are looking into buying a 62 Sport Roaster." You are also looking into a money pit. You need an appraiser to evaluate the car for initial price and evaluation of engine/transmission/brakes/top/frame/suspension etc. etc. Do you have the trainng , education , experience , determination energy...

    Lights Flickering

1st thing: Clean rust/paint away from the sheet metal where the voltage regulator is screwed down. Screws must be screwed down tight for a good ground connection. If they do not tighted up good, use a bigger sheet metal screw. If that doesn't do it, replace the voltage regulator with a new...

    TIRES

215x75Rx14. Note the weel rims and hubcaps were not designed for radials. Radials sidewalls flex much more than the old tires and flip off the hubcaps. A dab of "Plastic Dip" on each of the little grabbers on the hubcap keep hubcaps on . "Plastic Dip" is advertised with a picture showing...

    Cleaning Old Paint

Once tree sap dries , it almost take a stick of dynamite to get it off. Wal-Mart carries a small can of tree sap removal. It works a little bit. ( Depend how long the sap has dried ). Ask your auto paint supply store what they have. A body man might be able to wet sand and buff to get it off .

    Gas

-One thing leads to another ! Years of rust/calcium/lime have settled to the bottom of the engine blocks. The trash stores heat which is released when car is shut down. (Block heat + trash heat sometimes is enough to boil the antifreeze and it comes gushing out the radiator cap ) . A clean...
