    Tire Question

"Plastic Dip" is the actual commercial name. It's just liquid plastic . Found in Builders Square and some other hardward / paint stores.

    Tire Question

2 things: Radial sidewalls flex much more than the original tires. The "little grippers" on the wheel covers need to be bent so wheel cover really grip tight. If the wheelcover is damaged even slightly the wheelcover will still come off. In that case, I put " Plastic Dip: on all the little...

    Steering Wheels ?

In 1966 , the Special Landau was the only model with Simulated wood grain trim on the steering wheel, floor console, instrument panel, door panels, and overhead console.

    Conv. Header Strip

Maybe the parts vendors who sell rag tops and the rubber have installation instructions / diagrams they can eMail. Would also try Thunderbird Ranch - he's pretty helpful.

    1966 Heater Core

Went thru heater cord replacement couple months back. Bought a "New" core off one of the well known vendors in Oregon and it turned out to be hand-made piece of junk that had wrong length of pipe going out the firewall. Best to have you current piece recored. I was told there is an outfit in...

    freeze plugs

<html>Concluded I was just sold garbage steel freeze plugs with no galvanizing made in who-knows-where . I keep 2 gallons of Anti Freeze in the radiators even here in Daytona just for the rust protection of the water jackets. Have found 1 gallon just provided minimal rust protection.<p> <a...

    Hard starting 390

Vapor Lock is unlikely in Cold Winter. The Ford Carb on the 66 has a "Hot Idle Compensator" inside the carb designed to prevent vapor lock during Summer when it just gets too hot under the hood. Need correct gasket between carb & intake manifold . I have seen gas boil in the carb bowls because...

    Exhaust Manifolds on 66 390cu

<html>P.S. Welding manifold is a iffy proposition. It depends if welder is really experienced and iffy because there is so much heat in this exhaust ( contraction/expansion) cast iron welds just don't hold up. <a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/FL/Port_Orange.html"> <img...

    Exhaust Manifolds on 66 390cu

You didn't say which side has the exhaust manifold crack. The 66 Bird 390 has a heat riser on the passenger side . The heat riser requires a flat surface to bolt to the passenger exhaust manifold. 62-65 Birds did not have the heat riser so they will not work. As far as 352 manifold working ...

    Cleaning Old Paint

Wet 1500 - 2000 grit is OK for minor sap removal & oxidation. Forgot to mention for heavy and/or dried globs of sap : Kerosene will disolve tree sap and won't do any harm to auto paints. Wash car 1st to remove sand particles, then use sponge with Kerosene to dissolve sap . If sap has dried...

    Bypassing Transisitorized Ignition on '65

Oh me. The standard plug Autolite BF 42 specified by Ford was not designed for Hot coils. The standard plug w/HE Coil is more likely to jump the gap under load/acceleration and Interstate speeds. Install standard coil & standard plugs & keep the nice efficient distributor set-up. See if...

    61 Bird Tubular Push Rods

CORRECTION to above message: Pulled the rocker arms off today to discover the push rods were solid rods . The ball & socket at the top of the rod was the ball of the rod mating with the manual (lash) adjuster. It still appears I have a 390 with solid lifters.

    Bypassing Transisitorized Ignition on '65

Totally agree with " thought that I knew that the ignition coil will only put out the voltage required to fire the charge. If you have a 40K coil and only 8K is required to fire the charge, you will only get 8K out of the coil. Using a 40K coil will only benefit if you need voltage up to 40K."...

    AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH

Quick Test: Just clamp timing light on each of the plug wires. crank engine 2-3 seconds for each wire. If none of the wires light up the timing light : See that the coil is getting 12v with Ignition key in ON position. If coil is getting 12v: With Ign Key ON, A 12v test light must light up...

    Wipers won't stop

Totally agree with Yoda. The wiper "switch" is actually just a lever which pushes/pulls on a cable attached to the wiper motor under the cowl. If the wiper lever moves loose as a goose, the the cable has come loose at the wiper lever at the dash or at the wiper motor located under the cowl...

    Hard starting 390

Sounds like your engine is starting OK now. Maybe , don't mess with it and just drive it like you have been doing. These beasts must be driven regularily for best performance. Worst thing is to leave them sit. <a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/FL/Port_Orange.html"> <img...

    61 Bird Tubular Push Rods

Anyone ever seen a 1961 Thunderbird 390 Cu.In. Engine with Tubular Push Rods? The rods have ball and socket at the top. Intake Manifold is C1AE9425B Driver's Exhaust Manifold is C1SE8431A. I think it is a Police engine but my Tune Up Specs don't show a Police Engine for 1961. Thanks

    Hard starting 390

A warmed up engine firing/starting after a few seconds cranking is tolerable. But, your 390 can do better. When everything is right, you should be able to reach in the (open) window, turn the key, and it should fire up immediately. Now that's the Holy Grail. If you have driven 500 miles and...
