    Leaking fuel filter canister

Hi, After sitting a while (3-4 days or longer), the gasket on the fuel filter "can" leaks quite badly. Then after sitting a while, it doesn't leak any more. So, the gasket appears to swell when wet and seems to shrink when dry. I use 10% ethanol premium pump gas and was wondering if that...

    air scoop

Also, if the radiator appears to be original equipment, be sure to have it cleaned out by a radiator shop. That way you'll insure that you have maximum coolant flow through the radiator. Radiators often get plugged up with rust and gunk over the years.

    Uncle's 65 T-Bird

My '65 convertible top also didn't work when I bought it a few years ago. I never did get the button to work correctly so I made a semi-automatic switch panel that I keep under the arm rest like HeadacheGuy mentioned. It has five DPDT switches on it: power on/off; lock unlock/lock; deck...

    Gauges

I agree with you 100%. I did the same thing with my '65 convert and the gauges perform very well. As you noted, it might take a bit of tweaking to get them where I think they should be but it's MUCH better than that old gauge regulator.

    64 ammeter bounces

The small constant voltage regulator is only for the non-ammeter gauges. Don't mess with that one unless the other gauges are not reading correctly. The ammeter bounce is probably because of the alternator regulator. It is about 2 inches square and is found near the front of the engine...

    Is it the alternator?

If the regulator is the original one, you might want to replace that, too. If the points inside are stuck open, the battery won't charge from the alternator. You can't really fix them and solid state ones are relatively cheap - lots cheaper than alternators. Ken in MN

    Emergency Flasher Location

Hi, I have an easy one this time. Does any know where the emergency flasher can in located in my '65 convert? The blinker lights go on with the switch but they don't blink. Ken

PS Gets Harder as Car Gets Hotter

BillinAL, I syphoned out the old PS fluid (three times) and replaced it with Type FA AT fluid. I hasn't made an appreciable difference in the steering. In as little as 15 min of city driving, I can tell that the effort to move the wheel is getting harder. The pump still gets very hot (too...

    trouble with conv top

Arthur, Troubleshooting those convertible tops can be daunting, to say the least. It's not a Rube Goldberg setup but it's close. I temporarily solved my problem by wiring a set of four double-pole-double-throw switches to the relays. I also wired a master power switch that energizes the...

    Gas Guage Problem

The nice thing about his solid state CVR is that it is adjustable. I had to set mine higher than 5v because, as we all know, the old wiring doesn't work quite as good as when the cars were new. His contact info is: [email protected] Working under the dash is never any fun but the...

    Front End "Clonk"

I replaced the lower ball joints and the "clonk" is gone - nice and quiet.

    Gas Guage Problem

Jerry, The voltmeter is not controlled by the regulator. Be sure to check the voltage regulator. They get old and corrode inside. I had the same problem and I think that's the way I solved it but I can't remember the details. Ken in MN

    Gas Guage Problem

Jerry, Check and see if the oil and temp gauges are working properly. I'm guessing that there are reading low, too. If so, the silly constant voltage regulator is weak and not sending an average of 5-6 volts to the dash circuit. It is very difficult to troubleshoot this component because your...

PS Gets Harder as Car Gets Hotter

Hi, After replacing the ps pump and and steering gear box, I noticed that the steering is easy when the car (and pump) is cold but gets increasingly more difficult as I drive. It's almost as if I have very little PS pressure when the pump is hot. It's almost impossible to parallel park - it's...

    Power Steering Pump Replacement

gemman, I've been attempting to reach John Draxler by email and phone and have been unsuccessful. Are you sure he is still in business? The last post of his blog is 2011 and I expected him to have an update since then. Ken in MN

    Bad Steering Gear Box?

This is actually a continuation of the thread of the saga of the power steering pump I posted earlier. I finally found a rebuilt ps pump and got it installed. Then, when bleeding the system by turning left and right, I heard a "pop" and then I had NO power steering at all. It came back...

    Power Steering Pump Replacement

Hi, I'm having trouble finding a reliable replacement power steering pump for my '65. I'm on my third one from Cardone (from O'Reilly and NAPA) and either they are REALLY noisy or fail after installation. Does anyone know of a reliable source for rebuilt/new power steering pumps that aren't...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them both once the 'bird wakes up from its winter slumber.

    Front End "Clonk"

Hi, I have a front end suspension clonk every time I hit a bump of any size. I have new shocks, good ball joints, and new tie rod ends. The control arm bushings are looking cracked and hard. Could this be the culprit? Does anyone have any experience in diagnosing and replacing the bushings...
