You need to get under the car and mark the timing mark with white chalk for it to show up. The dwell has to be 26 to 28.5 deg. point gap 0.014 to 0.016. If the dwell is off, your timing is going to way off too. Bye the way, did you disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor before checking the timing.
