This may be the blind leading the blind as I am also new to Tbirds. I also have a 56. I removed my dash over the weekend and I took my tach drive cable out of the distributor. There is a small gear on the end of the tach cable. It is possible that your gear is still in the distributor and it just seperated from the cable. I believe this would be called the tach drive gear. I will look at mine again tonight to see how the cable connects to the gear.
