Went thru heater cord replacement couple months back. Bought a "New" core off one of the well known vendors in Oregon and it turned out to be hand-made piece of junk that had wrong length of pipe going out the firewall. Best to have you current piece recored. I was told there is an outfit in Texas that still has the right core. The honeycomb cores can be repaired- sometimes- depends where the leak is. A radiator man fixed one for me years ago by flooding the area of the leak with Solder.
