Post Rear axle seals

Grr... The Cougar's new rear axle (replaced the 2.50 axle that failed on me with a 2.75 from a junkyard) sprung a big leak of the driver's side axle seal. The same thing happened to my other axle! It wouldn't bother me too much except for the fact that I can't replace them myself... I don't have the press neccesary to get the outer ball bearings off the axles, which you need to remove to replace these particular seals. Has anyone else had similar problems with their 9" axles like I have? Gearworks, maybe you could shed some light on the situation. The axle has already started making noise, so I'm afraid I might have to replace it sooner than I wanted to... hopefully by that time I'll be able to afford to get the axle rebuilt with a trac-lock pack in it.
Which brings up another question for Gearworks; What is involved in putting 31 spline axles in a housing that originally had 28 spline units? And what cars had 31 spline axles that are the proper length for the axle housings in our cougars/tbirds?
Obviously I'll just have to take a trip out to Illanois and let Gearworks work his magic on the rear axle in his shop one of these days... ;)
