Jeff is right, if I were you I would pull the sending unit---you don't have to drop the tank, at least not on my 66. It is a sinch to remove with the tank in car. My sending unit was bad. When you get the new unit, phyisicaly ck. it against the gauge to see if it works ok. before installing it to make sure the gauge is ok. Also follow Jeff's insructions on the float, etc.
