I put lock ease in the key hole and it still didn't release - as silly as this sounds, I pushed down on the trunk while turning the key and it was enough to push the latch away from the post thus allowing the latch to release - the trunk then opened.

After getting it opened I cleaned the latch mechanism and applied WD-40 to quickly lubricate the mechanism and to get all parts moving freely, then I cleaned the excess and applied white lithium grease - trunk now opens easily.
