Before the detent look at the shifter first, they wear out and cause the same problem. Most definately drop the tank and get it cleaned. Radiator shops and engine machine shops can do this for you. If there is rust get it treated or replace it. For what you have spent so far the cost of the tank and sender are real close to chump change!
