64 Vert Auto Trans Leak

I am working on a friends 64 convertable. Has the 390 with an auto trans. It has a leak from the drivers side of the case which I think is the shifter shaft seal. I removed the pan and was going to remove the shifter shaft, but determined that there is not enough clearence for the shaft to exit the transmission before hitting the frame rail. Is there any why around this without removing the whole trans? The car sat for many years and the problem might be dried seals. I am thinking a stop leak additive might be the way to go if there is not other way to replace the seal. Any thoughts.

Thanks
John
