Welcome to the FE...I must have spent close to 40 hours fixing leaking mainfolds, mainly the drivers side.Replacing the gasket can be done in place and having done it a dozen times till i worked out why it was doing it. put the car on ramps as half the bolts are accessable from underneath easier than from the top.
If the old tin gasket has worn a groove in the manifold you will have to remove one of the engine mount bolts and jack to engine up to get it out and faced
In place i used a folded sanding disc to remove the old gasket material checking with my fingers to make sure it was all gone ( you cant see anything so let your fingers do the lookin).
Copper gasket sealer works the best on composite gaskets, and retorque the bolts after the engine has been run.
If it blows it again get the timing checked, my distributer needed to be rebuilt and recurved now shes as quiet as big block powered mouse..
