There are two petals linkages, one with the roller on the end of the linkage and one that is just a smooth curved metal end. The petal just pushes against either the roller or the smooth end, nothing on the back if the petal is needed - just rubber. If when you press the petal down the linkage slips out to the side of the petal one of two things is going on first petal mounted in the wrong spot - you mentioned all new floors - maybe it is off a bit??? Nest but more likely is the bracket that holds the linkage to the firewall is loose or so worn there is side to side play. Not too hard to locate and test from the engine side of the firewall.
